Amsterdam-based architectural firm UNStudio unveiled the design for the Urban Library of the Future and Centre for New Media in Gent, Belgium. The new complex creates a dynamic, flexible and open knowledge environment, with an open landscape, alternative circulation routes, several meeting areas and a public plaza. The building is fluid in form, accommodating to its surroundings and incorporates expansive sightlines. The internal organisation of the building is based on an open central void, around which the circulation takes place. This void enhances the spatial experience, creates clear orientation through the building and fulfills a bridging function between the city and the Municipal Library. The structure of the building makes it possible to introduce (green) roof terraces whilst also ensuring low levels of direct sunlight penetration.

Jakarta Next Project - Water Purification Skyscraper

The city of Jakarta, Indonesia, was originally designed in the confluence of thirteen rivers which were used for transportation and agriculture. The largest of its rivers is The Ciliwung River, which has been extremely polluted during the last couple of decades, characterizes by hundreds of slums inhabited by thousands of people in marginal conditions.

The Ciliwung Recovery Program (CRP) is a project that aims to collect the garbage of the riverbank and purify its water through an ingenious system of mega-filters that operate in three different phases. The first one separates the different types of garbage and utilizes the organic one to fertilize its soil. The second phase purifies the water by removing dangerous chemicals and adding important minerals to it. The clean water is then fed to the river and to the nearby agricultural fields through a system of capillary tubes. Finally in the third phase all the recyclable waste is processed.

One of the most important aspects of this proposal is the elimination of the slums along the river. The majority of the people will live and work at the CRP which could be understood as new city within Jakarta. The CRP project will be a 100 percent sustainable building that will produce energy through wind, solar, and hydroelectric systems.

Foster and Partners unveiled their design for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup bid, the Lusail Iconic Stadium which will provide a world-class football facility for 86,250 spectators during the opening ceremony, group games and final. Reflecting Doha’s culture and heritage, the stadium is designed to be highly energy efficient and capable of performing in extreme summer climatic conditions.

The stadium has a near-circular footprint and sits on the masterplan’s primary axis, which divides the stadium precinct into two halves. Encircled by a reflective pool of water, spectators cross the ‘moat’ to enter the building via six bridges. An outer pedestrian concourse extends from the water towards an array of smaller amenity buildings and a hotel at the stadium’s perimeter.

The saddle-form roof appears to float above the concrete seating bowl, discreetly supported by a ring of arching columns. Its central section can be retracted to allow the pitch to be either open to the sky or fully covered. The concave profile of the stadium’s outer enclosure evokes the sails of a traditional dhow boat and incorporates a system of operable louvres. Inside, the seating bowl is designed to enhance the experience and atmosphere for spectators: VIP and hospitality accommodation is concentrated along the sides of the pitch to create a continuous sea of fans behind each goal.

Located in the centre of a new development to the north of Doha, with direct connections by road and a new metro line, Lusail Iconic Stadium is intended to be a catalyst for further growth and has a highly progressive environmental strategy. Parking and service areas are shaded by canopies of solar collectors, which will produce energy for the stadium when it is in use, as well as generating power for neighbouring buildings.

HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar 2022 Bid, said: “The Lusail Iconic Stadium will serve as the perfect venue for the opening and final matches of the World Cup. The stadium will inspire a new generation of regional and international sports venues, incorporating environmentally friendly cooling technologies to ensure the ideal conditions for players and spectators alike. The design of the stadium provides fans with optimum views of the action in a cool and comfortable setting. Its beauty and ambition represent the pride and enthusiasm that we have displayed in our bid thus far and will continue to display until the day FIFA awards the 2022 World Cup and beyond.”

"The “Greenest of All Buildings” was recently completed in Mumbai, India and we couldn’t be more appalled. The Antilia house which unveiled its first renderings just over two-years ago has become a frightening reality, egregiously boasting 27 stories at 568 feet high, with a total area of over 398,000 square feet of living space.

What at first glimpse looks and sounds like a typical skyscraper is far from it – the Antilla is in fact a $1 billion family home built for India’s richest man (and Forbes’ fourth richest man) Mukesh Ambani, his wife, and three children. Constructed within a country estimated to have one-third of the world’s poorest population, the Antilia truly exemplifies the disease of excessive consumption, extreme wastefulness, and unsustainable living that is permeating today’s society."

New York City has one of the most recognizable skylines in the world. The city's architectural icons like the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty are pictured on the front of guidebooks and on numerous other souvenirs to evoke the excitement and eclectic flair of the Big Apple. Here are some other architectural gems to check out on your next trip to New York City:

The Flatiron Building

1. The Flatiron Building at 175 Fifth Avenue is a National Historic Landmark constructed in 1902. Its unusual shape (like an iron) was intended to fill the vacant piece of land at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. At its narrowest end, the Flatiron Building is only six feet across. Spiderman movie fans will recognize the building as the setting for The Daily Bugle, where Peter Parkers sells his photography.

The Waldorf-Astoria

2. The Waldorf-Astoria at 301 Park Avenue embodies classic New York City luxury and style with its three American and classic European restaurants, a beauty parlor, and several boutiques in this Art Deco hotel. As if this weren't enough to prove its grandeur, the United States government keeps a suite on the 42nd floor to house its United National ambassador.

3. Trump Tower at 725 Fifth Avenue is a more modern example of New York architecture on a grand scale. Developed as a multi-use building (retail, office, and residential) by Donald Trump, TV viewers will remember the lofty structure from Trump's reality show The Apprentice. At the time of its construction in 1983, Trump Tower was the tallest building of its kind in New York City at 58 stories.

4. The Chrysler Building at 405 Lexington Avenue is considered by some to be the world's finest skyscraper. Completed in 1930, this elegant Art Deco structure features ornamentation based on the Chrysler automobiles for which it was named (for instance, the 61st floor is adorned in eagles, which are replicas of the 1929 Chrysler hood ornaments). The building also inspired other skyscrapers around the world, including Philadelphia's One Liberty Place.

5. Federal Hall National Memorial at 26 Wall Street was the original capital of the United States where George Washington was inaugurated as president. It was later demolished, and the current building opened in 1842 as the United State's first Customs House. The hall's Doric columns and triangular top make the building one of New York's best example of Greek Revival architecture. It's now operated as a museum.

6. The Museum of Modern Art opened its current location at 11 West 53rd Street in November 2004. Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi designed the newly renovated building, which doubled the museum's space and preserved the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, where visitors enjoy coffee and modern architecture.

7. Grand Central Station at 15 Vanderbilt Avenue bustles with commuters and tourists in one of the most populated parts of the city. The information booth features a four-faced opal clock valued at between ten and twenty million dollars. Other architectural features include an elaborately painted ceiling in the main concourse. The astronomical designs on the ceiling were originally painted by French artist Paul C├ęsar Helleu in 1912 and restored in recent years.

8. St. Paul's Chapel at 209 Broadway was built in 1766, making it the only Manhattan building dating before the Revolutionary War. With its classical portico (or porch), boxy shape, and other architectural details, the Chapel is a perfect example of Georgian architecture. It was modeled after St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London.
